BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Location and Topography.

The township Mto wa Mbu is located in Monduli District west of Arusha region. The major socio – economic activities of the natives residing the area is agriculture, tourism and small-scale business.

Mto wa Mbu township is approximately 3,200 square Kilometers, it encompasses the sub villages such as Migombani, Jangwani, Majengo and Losirwa.

It lays in the Rift valley bordering the Lake Manyara National Park between longitudes 35º 50’ and 35º 45’ east and Longitudes 3º 23’ and 3º 39’ south. Mto wa Mbu has an altitudinal range of 960 – 1600 meters above sea level. It has an alkaline lake and forms the sump of an inland drainage system of 10,000m2.

This area lies at the foot of the Great East African Rift valley Escarpment, 180km from Arusha town and 85km from Tarangire National Park.

Climate.

The climate of Mto wa Mbu varies with altitude from the northern most ends to the southern end, thus the area enjoys the rainy seasons and namely long rains between march and June and short rains starts from October to December. Rainfall is not consistent and varies from year to year and the mean annual rainfall is 669mm.

During the dry months December to February temperatures are very high. Diurnal mean maximum and minimum temperatures of 31.4ºC and 21.7ºC respectively and the wet months (march to June) the temperatures are relatively low with mean maximum and minimum temperatures of 28.6ºC and 35.ºC C respectively.

Vegetation:

This used to be before settlement expansion. The area to see this now is in Lake Manyara Mto wa Mbu has different types of vegetation including the most delight full ground water forest found in water acacia sources woodland in sub villages of Migungani, Mnadani, and Kambi ya mkaa ;Mixed woodland, alkaline grassland in sub villages of magadini ya chini and Magadini ya Juu. The escarpment vegetation in Mlimani Park and Ngorongoro sub villages.
Woodland and forest stand about 50% and 26% escarpment. Ground water forest covers the northern part of the area, permanent springs allow the growth of relatively bush vegetation e.g. Trichild roka, Acacia Clavigera, part of the area. Also the springs, swamps and in lake Manyara National Park that is situated at the western side.

Geology and soil.

The northern part of Mto wa Mbu is composed mainly of porous volcanic rocks, which allows many clear water streams to emerge at the base of the rift wall.
The volcanic rock gives river way to ancient crystalline formation, which is hard and porous.

Soil types of the area are mainly plain soils that are light coloured. These soils are not devoid of organic matter and mineral elements but their alkaline and saline nature impairs the growth of larger forms of plant life.

People and Population.

The area was dry and sparsely populated until the middle part of the 20th century when the first steps were made for irrigation system. The success of the irrigation turned Mto wa Mbu into a green oasis and a fertile valley able to support many types of agriculture.

This has attracted people from every parts of Tanzania. Thus constituting in the area heterogeneous congregations of more than hundred tribes. This rapid population growth turned fruits and vegetables from all over Tanzania were introduced in the area turned Mto wa Mbu into a melting pot of cultures. In Tanzania, Mto wa Mbu is the only area where by different tribes gathered in such a small area. Many people have still kept their traditions. There are various traditional modes of production stand as an example of this cultural diversity.

The population of Mto wa Mbu is estimated in 1998 at 16000 inhabitants. There is increase rate of 4.2% per annum in human population since 1988.


Mto wa mbu means a river of Mosquitoes with the population of more than 18,000 inhabitants.
There has been more population pressure since 1999 after installation of electricity and construction of new tarmac road completed almost 6 years ago have influenced more people to immigrate into the area.

Apart from that lots of people come into this area due to availability of fertile land and there is enough water for irrigation. Also being located along the road leading to Lake Manyara National Park, Ngorongoro and Serengeti then lots of people come into the area to try their luck in tourism related activities of business. Therefore it is estimated that there are over 27,000 people including Maasai communities reciting in Losirwa area.

Like any other growing town Mto wa mbu faces lots of challenges, one of them being health issues. There are inadequate health services. The dispensary and health service does not fit the entire population.
Also people living adjacent to Mto wa Mbu come into the area to seek health services. This includes places such as Losirwa, Selela, Engaruka, Makuyuni, etc.

The following is the data (information) we collected from the hospital:-

1. Name of the hospital is Kigongoni Health Center
2. Number of Doctors are 3
3. Number of Nurses are 11
4. Common Diseases are Malaria, Pneumonia, Upper respiratory tract infections, Intestinal worms, TB, HIV/AIDS, diarrhoea, Intestinal worms, Malnutrition and Sexual Transmitted diseases.
5. No. of out patients per day (opd) is 70 patients per day
6. No. Of beds for in patients is 20 beds
7. Service offered is Home Based Care for chronic diseases such as TB, HIV/AIDS, etc and Mobile Clinic for vaccination, malnutrition, and eye related disease such as trachoma, etc.

NB: Period of mobile clinic and home based care is once a week (there is a need of more visits due to the presence of more patients and lots of them live far away from hospital.

20. Electricity back up system due to unstable supply of electricity. This causes vaccinations drugs to expire.

22. computer for data storage and internet facility.
